The Cutouts
As part of her studio practice, Fafi works presently on a new body of work called « The Cutouts », these pieces depicting her famous « Fafinettes » characters are numbered, diligently registered and gladly using the « Fafi Color Library », a chromatic device catalyzing pigments and paint from her travels around the world.
Challenging her regular "Tracés" made in less than 10’ on forgotten urban devices, the “Cutouts”have been created to be consumed and appreciated like candy. These created pictures are by turns self-reflective and playful, projecting a certain innocence and femininity where Fafi excels.
The key medium XPS matter found and used for this series recalls souvenirs of the street walls in structure and touch and yet were discovered after playing around with surfboards. In fact, the combining matter added to the infinite possibilities of warm-cut free shaping is totally giving life to her characters in a new established way, acting like the Fafinettes have been stolen from a wall, wandered around and installed into another location.
Fafi marshals lines and shapes into a configuration that extends the use of traditional canvas, bringing her street practice at home or in museums. Abstracting from geographic and social relationships between people and places. The densely worked, layered compositions establish networks of shapes and color that link painterly forms with objects of desire.
Following a recent installation in a lit art studio in San Sebastian, Fafi is eager to discover a new inspiration and development of her art.
